The Valise Project
Pb & J Sandwich
Andy Yoder

An unsuspecting exterior opens up to a telling interior in this three-foot sculpture of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich that stimulates our intellect rather than our appetite. The giant hinged slices of wonder bread swing open and reveal thirty-one compartments, each containing an artistic representation of the thirty-one ingredients that make up this simple sandwich. The ingredients, some natural and some artificial, look far from edible, advising viewers that the food we eat involves a lot more than what meets the eye.

About the artist: Andy Yoder lives and works in Vermont. The artist uses common objects in unexpected ways in order to question attitudes and conventions that govern our environment and behavior. He has made objects from silver, licorice, rope, and more. Yoder was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1957 and had his first solo exhibition in 1988. He is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine and his sculptures have been shown throughout the country.
