Jim Lawrence
Whimsical sculptures of fairy tale characters from around the world fill a rustic wooden toy box. Students unpack the characters—some familiar and some unfamiliar—and situate them in front of a painted landscape screen that portrays the setting of each story. The exterior of the box is hand-carved, doubling as a woodblock printing surface and inspiring wonder about the contents within.
About the artist: Jim Lawrence lives and works in New Mexico. Lawrence combines carving and painting to produce sculptural still-lifes and figurescapes, rendering ordinary figures—from pets to people—with great playfulness and imagination.
