Wax, Paper and Paintings: Jolynn Krystosek arrives at Lux Art Institute as the First
Artist-in-Residence of ‘09
October 29, 2008
ENCINITAS, Calif — (October 29, 2008) — Lux Art Institute, San Diego’s
interactive art destination, will welcomes Jolynn Krystosek as the season’s
thirdfirst resident artist of ’09.
Krystosek, a mixed media sculptor and painter from New York City, will take up residence
at Lux from Jan. 10 – Jan. 31 and create a large-scale, 8’ by 10’ paper
collage. The piece will begin with drawings, which will subsequently be projected
on and cut from various layers of thin, white rice paper. The cut papers will then
be layered over one another and adhered to the wall. This process creates a rich,
layered installation that undulates with shadow and texture.
Visitors can “see art happen” while Krystosek is in the studio and view
her completed work through March 18, 2009.
The exhibit will also feature Krystosek’s sculptural paper cut-outs, intricate
wax floral relief carvings, and watercolors of exotic fowl adorned with real feathers.
Her carvings and large-scale, site-specific paper cut-outs reflect traditional craftsmanship,
Dutch still life painting, botanicals, and Victorian cameos. Both media demonstrate
Krystosek’s mastery of materials and the temporal subject matter.
“It is rare to see the elegance of detail and exquisite rendering of lush
forms in an ancient material like wax,” said Lux Director Reesey Shaw. “The
contrast of the contemporary imagery in old world frames makes for a stunning visual
paradox, and we look forward to watching the evolution of the wall installation
here at Lux.”
Krystosek was born in California and earned her BA from San Francisco State University
and her MFA from Hunter College in New York. The 26-year-old now lives and works
in New York City.
Krystosek has exhibited at the Philadelphia Art Alliance and at Lucas Schoormans
Gallery, the Horticultural Society of New York, Broadway Gallery, 3rd Ward, and
Hunter Times Square Gallery, all in New York City.
Lux hours are Thursday and Friday, 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; cost
is $10 for two visits.
